New education policy 2020

The union cabinet approved the new National Educational Policy (NEP)

New Education Policies approved:

1. School education

  • Government schools will now offer pre-school education
  • India’s education setup of 10+2 will now be 5+3+3+4
  • Children between 3-8 yrs will be taught from nursery to class 1-2 under foundational school
  • Children between 8-11 yrs will be taught from class 3 to 5 under preparatory school
  • Children between 11-14 yrs will be taught from class 6 to 8, under middle school
  • Children between 14-18 yrs will be taught from class 9 to 12, under secondary school

2. Optional subjects after 10

  • Students may choose subjects such as arts, crafts, vocational alongside the conventional ones

3. Language as the medium of instruction

  • It advises use of mother tongue/region language/local language until class 5
  • Freedom to choose the languages should be left to the state/student/region

4. Board exams

  • Board exams will be redesigned to make them easier
  • It will test primarily core capacities/competencies rather than months of coaching and memorisation
  • Students will be allowed to write board exams twice to improve your score

5. Higher education

  • 4 year undergraduate programme has returned in higher education
  • Colleges can choose between the current 3-year undergraduate programmes and a 4-year programme
  • 4-year programme will provide eligibility for direct admission for a PhD


6. Multiple Exit option for UG students

  • Students will have the option to leave college whenever they want
  • If a student completes one year he or she will get a certificate
  • If a student completed 2 years will get them a diploma
  • If a student completes 3 years will get them a degree

7. Government has also done a way with the MPhil

  • Eligibility for Ph D will either be a 4 year programme with research, or Master’s after a 3 year programme

8. Multi Disciplinary universities

  • All institutes will aim to become multidisciplinary
  • Single-stream institutions will fade out by 2040
  • Regulators like UGC, AICTE, NCTE will be replaced by a single regulator
